The Grand Rapids Feminist Film Festival is a one-day celebration dedicated to elevating voices and showcasing talent from historically underrepresented groups in mainstream media.

Our mission is to:

● Bring awareness to the lack of diverse representation in front of and behind the camera
● Inspire and empower media creators of underrepresented and marginalized groups to engage in filmmaking as a feminist act
● Examine media through the intersecting lenses of gender, sexuality, race, ability, class, age, etc. 
● Cultivate a welcoming safe space that fosters cross­-cultural understanding

The GRFFF was originally the brainchild of independent publisher The Bandit Zine as a film version of their magazine. What started as a small evening showcase has now grown into an all-day festival that includes interactive workshops and panels, performances by local artists, and films screened from around the world.

This coming spring, the festival will be held at Wealthy Theatre in Grand Rapids. We'll be hosting speakers, performances, and upwards of 25 short films.

We’re excited to see the fest return this year, and are so happy to be a part of the ever­-evolving Grand Rapids feminist community.

GRFFF is run entirely by volunteers and is made possible through community partnerships and sponsors.

EARLY BIRD DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS NOVEMBER 10, 2023.

REGULAR DEADLINE IS JANUARY 10, 2024.

CRITERIA

We accept films from any genre, at any production level, from anywhere in the world. To be considered, films must be:

  • Created by one or more members of underrepresented or marginalized groups

  • In line with social justice advocacy

  • Under 25 minutes in length

  • English-language subtitled if a non-English language film

Submit films on FilmFreeway. There is a small submission fee which helps pay for the costs of putting on the festival and keeping it free for everyone to enjoy. If you are financially unable to pay the submission fee, please email us to apply for a waiver at contact@grfff.org.

 

FAQ

What kind of films are considered feminist films?

There is no one template for a feminist film. We accept narrative, documentary, animated, and experimental films covering all sorts of topics. However, the main goal of the GRFFF is to elevate voices and showcase talent from historically underrepresented groups in mainstream media. See our Programming page to learn more about past screenings.

 

When will I know if my film has been accepted?

We will be notifying everyone, whether your film has been accepted or not, by April 1, 2024.

 

How will I be notified?

You will receive an email from us and also be notified through FilmFreeway.

Will prizes be awarded? 

Since our priority is to showcase a wide range of talent and voices from all ages and skill levels, rather than create a competitive atmosphere, we do not award prizes.
